Make Your Shank
I recently read the book Rework by Jason Fried and David Heinemeier Hansson, and they discuss the concept of "making a shank for your business." And I thought, "Yes!" That also makes sense when it comes to training.
Let me explain what I mean. In the book, the authors mention that prisoners work with what they have to accomplish their "goals." While we certainly don't want to "shank" anyone in the professional world, the theory rings true with your organizations. We still need to meet company milestones, which can mean working within certain limitations. Often training seems like a luxury that we can't afford to implement. It takes too much time to create a plan, have your subject matter experts expend their valuable time implementing that plan, which means they're not producing" and bringing in revenue. I'm here to tell you that there is a solution. Together, we can make your "shank" when it comes to training your team. I know that every business is unique and training is not a one-size-fits-all type of need. While there will be some work up-front, training can increase your revenue by ensuring that your sales staff is selling the value of your products or services and not just pushing products.
If you were to walk around your location, listen to your staff talk with each other and their customers, are they consistent in their messages? Do you feel they fully understand how they contribute to the business's overall goal? Also, make time to talk with your HR professional and ask them about turnover. Do they measure the percentage of turnover you may have? Is there a way to measure why staff may be leaving? If you can't measure it, then you can't fix it. Finally, look at your strategic initiative when it comes to sales goals. Precisely what does your company have in place to meet those goals, and is your sales team aware of the specifics?
